CS1 Lewis Gyles Collins, USN, retired, age 82 of Kenedy, TX., passed away on Saturday, October 10, 2015, in New Braunfels, TX. Lewis was born on July 13, 1933, in Bowman South Carolina to the late Alfred Leroy and Lillie Mae Stroman Collins. He retired from the U.S. Navy as a CS1-Culinary Specialist, after 21 years of proudly serving his country. During his enlistment, Lewis served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, received numerous medals, awards, and honors, along with traveling to over 25 countries and living in over 20 states. Lewis also retired as Chief Dietician from Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital in Kenedy, TX. after 23 years of employment. On July 23, 1974, he married the love of his life, Maria Trinidad Alvear, in Kenedy, TX. Lewis was a faithful and devout member of First Baptist Church, Kenedy for many years. He was a caring, gentle, and honest man who was loved by many and he cherished his family above all, preceded only by God.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Alfred Leroy and Lillie Mae Stroman Collins; sister, Mrs. Donald Greene (Norine); brothers, Shelby and Maxcie Collins and grandsons, Guadalupe Rodriguez and Thomas Ray (Tray) Vickery III.
He is survived by his loving wife Maria Trinidad Collins of Kenedy; daughters, Sally Dovalina of Gonzales, Rosemary Vickery and husband Tommy of Kenedy, Sarah Booker and husband Michael of Floresville; sons, Roger Dovalina and wife Belinda of Helotes, John Dovalina and wife Rachel of Austin; sister, Mrs. Farris Brill (Faye) of South Carolina; brothers, A.L. Collins of South Carolina, Woodrow Collins of South Carolina; 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Family Visitation will be Tuesday, October 13, 2015, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Eckols Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, October 14, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Kenedy, with Pastor Matt Singleton officiating. Interment will follow at the Kenedy Cemetery, Kenedy, TX.
Serving as Pallbearers will be Roger Dovalina, John Dovalina, Tommy Vickery, Michael Booker, Travis Vickery, and Edward Dovalina.
Honorary Pallbearers are Nicholas Dovalina, Collin Booker, Deacon Booker, Elijah Booker, Giovanni Reyna, and Vicente Reyna.
