Abel M. Rivera was born on July 12, 1950 in Caro, Michigan, and passed away on March 31, 2023 in Kenedy, Texas, at the age of 72.

He is survived by his daughters Betty Jo Blietz (Gerad), Bobbie Jo Rivera (Robin Thienpont), Jennifer Rivera (Zeke Lopez)and Melanie Monroe (Jesse).

Grandkids, Kamiryn Blietz, Jackson Blietz, Phoenix Lopez, Daryn Thienpont, Maddoux Lopez, David Cardenas, Dylan Cardenas and Jordan Monroe. Sisters, Sandra Rivera and Leticia Lerma, brothers, Rudy Rivera, Timothy Rivera, Joe Rivera, Daniel Rivera and Gilbert Rivera and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lucy Maciel Rivera and Rudy Rivera, brother Ricardo Rivera and niece Gabriela Lerma.

Abel was the oldest of nine children. The son of migrant workers, he was born in Michigan, where his parents worked in the strawberry fields. He would work those same fields growing up, going back and forth between Michigan and Texas. Abel attended school in San Antonio, Texas. After graduating from Edgewood High School, he was drafted and served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War; earning the National Defense Medal and Sharp Shooter (Rifle) distinctions.

In 1970, he married Mary Lou Sanchez. Together they had 4 daughters.

Abel, like many veterans, battled his demons, but in good times, he enjoyed hanging out with his friends, playing tennis, rock-n-roll, cook outs and of course, dogs. Mostly self-employed, his work varied in the service industry from auto towing to carpentry.  Later in life, he only needed the daily newspaper and a taco. If he wasn’t cheering on the Dallas Cowboys or the San Antonio Spurs, he usually rooted for the underdog. The family would like to thank the staff at Kenedy Health and Rehabilitation for all their care and support these last four years.

Graveside Services will be held at Fort Sam Houston with Military Honors on Thursday, April 13, 2023 at 1:30 P.M. in San Antonio, TX.

Maria DeLaRosa was born, April 13, 1947 in Choate, Texas and was 75 years old when she went to be with the Lord on, March 31, 2023. Maria was raised in Pawnee and Kenedy, Texas. She later married and moved to San Antonio, Texas.

She is preceded in death by her husband Juan DeLaRosa, her parents Crucita Chapa Reyna and Gabriel Chapa, Sr. and her brother Gabriel Chapa, Jr..

She is survived by her three beloved children; Santos A. DeLaRosa  (Caroline) of Corpus Christi, Texas, Diane Castellano (Scott) of San Antonio, TX, Rebecca DeLaRosa (Efren) of San Antonio; grandchildren, Santos A. DeLaRosa, Jr. (Stephanie) of Cuero, Texas, Eric S. Castellano, Isaac S. Castellano, Angelica N. Castellano of San Antonio, Texas; step-grandchildren, Efran Ledezma, Jr. of Elmendorf, Texas and Jimena Devora of San Antonio, Texas; two great-granddaughters, Abigail A. DeLaRosa ,Ava A. DeLaRosa of Cuero, Texas; brothers, Andres Chapa (Janie) of Edna, Texas; sister, Soila Vasquez (Gilbert) of Karnes City, Texas; sister-in-law Maria Guadalupe DeLaRosa of San Antonio, Texas and also survived numerous nieces and nephews.

A Holy will be recited Friday April 14, 2023 at 7:00 P.M. in the Eckols Funeral Home Chapel.  Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, April 15, 2023 at 10:00 A.M. at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church with Rev. Odilia G. Gonzales, Age 90 of Karnes City, TX passed away on March 11, 2023 at home surrounded by her loving family.  Odilia was born on February 14, 1933 in Millersview, TX to the late Patricio Gonzales and Jesusa Garza Gonzales.  She married Ramon Gonzales, Sr. on September 21, 1952 in Karnes City, TX; was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, retired from Pawnee ISD after 28 years of providing devout dietary services and continued providing her dietary services to many of the nursing homes in the Karnes County area that include, John Paul II Nursing Home, Restful Acres, and Karnes City Health and Rehab. She was also a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church  and will be greatly missed.

She is preceded by her husband, parents, daughter, Mary Molina’ brothers, Guadalupe Gonzales, Arturo Gonzales and Jose A. Gonzales.

She is survived by her children, Irma Arenas of Kenedy, Modesta and husband Juan of Karnes City, Susie Martinez of Karnes City, Lupe Badillo of Louisiana; sons, Ramon Gonzales and wife Sylvia of Karnes City, Johnny Gonzales and wife JoAnn of Karnes City, Armando Gonzales and wife Lydia of El Oso, brother, Ernest Gonzales of Mesquite; 33 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and many dear family members and friends.

Seferino G. Serna, Sr. a lifelong resident of Pawnee, Texas, entered into eternal rest on Monday, March 13, 2023 at home in Ray Point, Texas at the age of 88 years 7 months and 14 days.

Seferino was born, August 26, 1934 in El Oso, Texas, the son of Aurelio Serna, Sr. and Luisa Gonzales Serna.  He married Elida Villanueva on June 10, 1956 in Pawnee, Texas.  Mr. Serna was a hardworking farmer and rancher, a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and great-great grandfather.

Seferino is survived by his beloved wife of over 66 years, Elida Serna of Pawnee, TX; his sons, Roque Serna and wife Lillian from Nell, TX, Rene Serna and wife Delia of Beaumont, TX; his daughters, Estella Perez and husband Thomas of Kenedy, TX, Imelda Marin and husband Joe from Ray Point, TX, Ilda Serna from Pawnee, TX, Irene Aguirre and partner Richard Moya of Three Rivers, TX; his brother, Dionicio Serna of Guymon, Oklahoma; sister-in-law, Anita Serna from Pawnee, TX; brother-in-law, Servando Villanueva of Garden City, Kansas.  He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great grandchildren plus 2 on the way.

Mr Serna is preceded in death by his son, Seferino Serna, Jr.; his parents, his sisters, Maria Villanueva, Felicita Smith and his brothers, Elifonso, Fernando and Isaac Serna.

Visitation will be held Friday, March 17, 2023 in the Eckols Funeral Home Chapel from 5PM to 7:30PM with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:30 PM.  Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, March 18, 2023 at 2:00 PM ay Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Pawnee, TX with the Rev. Richard Zielensky officiating.  Interment will follow in the Nell Cemetery in Nell, TX.

Zachary Tyler Decas was taken from this world on or about December 5, 2022.
Zachary was born on April 18, 1989 at Otto Kaiser Hospital in Kenedy Texas.
Zachary’s family includes: Son, Aiden Christensen, Mother, Ruby Delaine (Dee Dee) Remmers, Father, Craig Decas, Brother, Joshua Decas, Nephew, Jayton Cole Decas and Niece, Jalynn Decas. Zachary was a beloved son, brother, nephew, grandson, uncle, cousin and friend. He had a kind soul, was a loyal friend, and had a knack for making people laugh. He was taken too soon and he will be missed.
Services will be held Saturday March 11, 2023 at Eckol’s Funeral Home in Kenedy at 10 am. Lunch will be served following the service at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Karnes City from 12-3.

Bridgett Bea Gonzales, Age 51,  passed away on February 17, 2023 in San Antonio, TX.  Bridgett was born on October 23, 1971 in Karnes City, TX to the Robert Diaz Gonzales and Beatrice Soliz Villafranca. She graduated high school from Kenedy, TX where she grew up and completed her undergraduate Degree from Incarnate Word University in San Antonio, TX.  Bridgett was an adventurous soul who loved to travel and make memories with friends and family. Some of her favorite pastimes included attending concerts from country artist such as George Strait, Garth Brooks, Terri Clark and so many more. She loved to attend various rodeos such as the San Antonio, Houston, and even the National Rodeo finals in Las Vegas. 

Bridgett is preceded in death by her parents, Robert Diaz Gonzales and Beatrice Soliz Villafranca; grandparents, Tomasa Diaz, Eugenio Gonzales, Beatrice Soliz and Eusebio Soliz.

Bridgett is survived by her brother Robert Gonzales; nephews Robert Gonzales III and Justin Gonzales; sister Roseann Villafranca; Step-father Raul Villafranca  and many dear family members and friends.

Manuel Nunez, Jr., Age 72 of Nordheim, TX passed away on February 21, 2023 in Victoria, TX.  Manuel was born on May 10, 1950 in Kenedy, TX to the late Manuel, Sr. and Olivia Farias Nunez.  Manuel married Adelia Garcia Nunez on Oct. 20, 1970 in Nordheim, was a loader operator for Brannon Paving Company before retirement to enjoy his grandchildren and living life to his fullest and was of the Catholic Faith.

Manuel is preceded in death by his parents, Manuel, Sr. and Olivia Farias Nunez; sisters, Flora Segura, Susana Salinas, and Rosa Salinas.

Manuel is survived by his loving wife Adelia Garcia Nunez of Nordheim; children, Cynthia Perez and husband Andrew of Victoria; son, Johnny Nunez of Nordheim; sisters, Maria Nunez of Kenedy, Manuela Herrera of Runge; brother, Joe Nunez of Kenedy; grandchildren Isaac Perez and Jason Perez of Victoria and many dear family members and friends.

Erna Hilda Boerm Borgfeld went to heaven on February 15, 2023. She was born April 25, 1926 in the country, near Nordheim, Texas. She went to school through the third grade in a local country school, following which she stayed home to help her mother and grandfather on the farm.  She married her best friend, Alton Borgfeld on August 1, 1944 prior to his leaving for World War II military service.  They lived on Erna’s mother farm between Nordheim and Runge.   In 1964, they moved to Karnes County to their own farm, raising chickens, cows, pigs and sheep.   She was an awesome cook and seamstress.  She loved to crochet and sew, often making many gifts for family and friends.  She was a member at St. Paul’s Lutheran church.  Erna has missed Alton terribly since his death in 2017, ending 73 years of marriage.  In 2018, due to health issues, Erna moved to Round Rock, Texas, to be near her only son, Curt and his family.

Erna was the last surviving member of her family.  She is predeceased by her husband Alton; her grandson, Kyle Borgfeld; her parents and her 6 siblings.  She is survived by her son, Curt Borgfeld, his wife, Lynette; her grandchildren Sawyer Borgfeld, Kelly Borgfeld Woods (spouse Ryan Woods), and Kevin Borgfeld. She is also survived by nieces, nephews and their families.

Many thanks to the people that have helped care for Erna, during these last few years, including Mary Patrick, an independent caregiver.  Also thanks to the Round Rock Brookdale staff and caregivers, as well as, St. David’s hospice nurses, caregivers, musical therapy, and chaplain services.

Visitation will be on February 26^th of 2023, from 2 pm. until 5 pm.  Funeral services to held at 2 pm on February 27^th of 2023.  All services will be at Echols Funeral Home, 420 West Liveoak Street, Kenedy, Texas 78119.  Interment will follow in the Nordheim Cemetery, Nordheim, TX.

Memorials can be given to the Nordheim Cemetery or to charities of your choosing.
