Henry U. Garcia
August 6, 1927 ~ October 1, 2025
Enrique Ureste Garcia, also known as Henry, was born on August 6, 1927 in Karnes County, Texas, near the community of Green, where he lived most of his life. He was one of 11 children born to Teclo Johnson Garcia and Gregoria Ureste Garcia. He attended school at the Green Schoolhouse in a time when electricity wasn’t even available yet in rural areas. His family finally got electricity in their home when he was 14 years old. Henry was a farmer/rancher, an avid hunter and an excellent horseman. He helped his father take care of the farm for many years. He also spent many days riding and breaking horses, even teaching some of his horses to do tricks. He loved trail rides and rode in many, including those from Laredo to San Antonio, and on the annual trail rides from Corpus to San Antonio to kick off the Stock Show and Rodeo. Henry also had a wealth of knowledge about the outdoors. He was an amazing shot with a rifle, and was often seen bringing home various game animals for supper. Hunting was a way of life for him, and he passed that on his family. Later in his life, he also spent many years working at Alamo Lumber and Cement in Kenedy as a cement truck driver. He had 3 children, 6 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. He often enjoyed finding, fixing and repurposing old junk or toys for his grandchildren. In his retirement years, he started a local mowing business, always taking time to stop and have a friendly chat with his clients. He loved spending time with his family and friends, often visiting over coffee or even taking trips across the state to visit a brother, sister, cousin or friend. He wasn’t one to talk much about himself, but he loved to listen to anyone who could tell an interesting story. Henry was a great friend to many. He spent his final years at Bluebonnet Nursing Home where he made many new friends and enjoyed the good company and care of the staff. He enjoyed sitting outdoors at Bluebonnet, watching many sunsets and identifying the various birds that he listened to while outdoors. Henry was one of a kind. He will be remembered by many and truly missed.
