Joyce Maxine Sahm Pogue
Joyce Maxine Sahm Pogue passed away Thursday, March 6, 2025, at the age of 89. Joyce was born in the community of El Oso outside Kenedy, Texas, to Hilbert Sahm and Elsie Esse on February 24, 1936. She graduated from Kenedy High School, and Texas State University, ultimately receiving a master’s degree from Corpus Christi State University. While attending Texas State University, she married Roger Kent Pogue in 1957. After graduation, the couple moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, and began teaching and raising their family. Throughout her lifetime, Joyce enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, country western dancing, outdoor activities and tending bulbs and flowers in her flowerbeds. After retiring, she liked to play golf. She enjoyed her grandchildren immensely and their beloved “Mamaw” shared a special relationship with them while they were growing up. Joyce delighted in serving as our extended family’s historian. She treasured the opportunity to reconnect with her childhood roots, living life as a “country girl.” Joyce was predeceased by her parents and her sister and brother-in-law, Addie Mae and Roy Retzloff. Joyce is survived by her husband of 67 years, Roger Kent Pogue, her children Jamie Pogue Richards (husband Francis), Gina Pogue Morris (husband Nick), and Kyle Kent Pogue (wife Kelly); her grandchildren – Austin Brandt Richards (wife Amy), Justin Lee Richards (wife Gretchen), Ryan Paul Kim (wife Erin) and Caden Carter Pogue and her great grandchildren – Brandt Daniel Richards, Kennedy Jon Richards and Lainey Kate Richards.
Visitation will be held Friday, March 14, 2025, beginning at 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Eckols Funeral Home Chapel with services beginning at 1:00 pm with Pastor Lee Ann Dye-Barker officiating. Interment will follow in Pawnee Cemetery.
