Elaine Scarborough Person

Elaine Scarborough Person, 72, died on  January 28, 2019, in Victoria, Texas. She was born on July 25, 1946, in Kenedy,Texas, to the late Joyce Miller Scarborough and William Terry “Bill” Scarborough, Jr. She lived her early life in Pettus and Kenedy and attended Kenedy schools. She spent much time in her grandparents Grace Pierce Scarborough and Terry Scarborough’s household and was very close with her cousins Dan McLendon, Mary “Bitsey” McLendon, Terry McLendon, and Patricia Roberts [Hammack]. She was a graduate of Kenedy High School’s Class of 1964, where she played the flute in the marching band and was voted Most Beautiful. Soon after graduation, Elaine moved to Lake Jackson, Texas, to live with her mother and younger sisters Sheree and Marie to help care for them. She worked at Bridge Harbor Marina in Freeport for a period of time where she met her first husband, David Wayne Franklin. They married in 1965, and their son David was born in 1966. Following her divorce, Elaine moved to Houston, where she raised her son, and worked at A&E Products, Inc., where she served as secretary and as part of the sales staff. In 1973, she married James E. “Jimmy” Person. They made their home in Houston where their daughter Darla was born in 1983. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Elaine was involved in childcare and children’s education. She had her own childcare business, was a Mother’s Day Out teacher at College Park Baptist School, and after she and Jimmy divorced, moved to Kenedy, and worked as a teacher’s aide and substitute teacher in the Kenedy and Karnes City Independent School Districts. Elaine continued her career in care and education when she moved to Beeville in 2000, working as a program facilitator in the Coastal Plains Mental Health Mental Retardation Center for fourteen years. She worked for the Beeville Independent School District from 2014 to 2018 in their Kindergarten Special Needs program, retiring in August 2018.  After retirement, she moved to Victoria to live near her cousins Patricia Hammack and Terry McLendon. Although her retirement was brief, she was enjoying life, making new friends, and anticipating time for her hobbies. Elaine was preceded in death by her beloved son David Person. Survivors include daughter Darla Person Salas of Stockdale; sisters Sheree Scarborough of Roanoke, Virginia, Marie Scarborough of Pearland, Dorothy Scarborough of Austin, Shirley Scarborough of San Antonio, and Sandra Kasprzyk Yanta of Karnes City; brothers David Kasprzyk of Elgin, and Clem Kasprzyk of Kenedy; step-mother Florence Yosko Scarborough; two step-children Roy Person and Tammy Person; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.  Funeral Services will be held at Eckols Funeral Home in Kenedy on Saturday, February 9, at 1:00p.m. with Dr. Terry McLendon presiding. Visitation on Friday, February 8, from 5:00p.m. to 7:00p.m. at Eckols Chapel. Pallbearers will be Benjamin Scarborough Baird, Weston Yanta, Tate Kaspar, Dylan Eklund, Phil Miller, and Kevin Hammack. Elaine dearly loved children and animals. Memorials may be made to CASA for Children: Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (Golden Crescent Casa), the Dorothy H. O’Connor Pet Adoption Center in Victoria, or the COPD Foundation.
